On land and by the sea, we celebrate our rural history closely woven around the natural resources of this spectacular coast. During the booming eastern gold rush of the 1800s, Eastern Shore mines in Goldenville and Moose River were producing more gold per capita than Dawson City and Yellowknife. Explore the amazing stories of that time and see the fascinating workings of a gold mine with a visit to one of the community interpretive centres.
Take a harbour tour aboard a classic Cape Island boat and then explore the heritage exhibits of Fisherman’s Cove or just sit for a bit and watch the hard working men and women of our inshore fishing fleet busy aboard the boats that coming and go from this 200 year old port. Combine those activities with a visit to the Fisherman’s Life Museum and you’ll have experienced a one-of-a-kind look at the traditional Maritime life.
Plan a day’s outing to Sherbrooke Village or to the Canso Islands National Historic Site for a trip back to the 1800s or way back to the earliest days of settlement along our coast. Animators bring Sherbrooke Village’s heritage buildings to life four times a day. And you can wander the trails and ruins of the Canso Islands at your leisure and investigate the interpretive displays and exhibits for a deeper look into our long-ago past.
